The Belmont Stakes was founded in 1867 by Leonard Jerome, a prominent horse owner and breeder. The race was originally named the Jerome Stakes in honor of Jerome's father, Isaac Jerome. In 1896, the race was renamed the Belmont Stakes after August Belmont, Jr., who had purchased Jerome Park Racetrack and moved the race to Belmont Park.
